Morcambe
Following an ideas-led design competition, seven are now developing an exciting refurbishment scheme that will breathe new life into this fascinating Victorian building.
More Music, one of the leading training and education groups in the northwest, is playing a pivotal role in the socio-economic regeneration of Morecambe, effectively using the arts as a catalyst for social change.
They have occupied the ground floor of Devonshire Hall for 12 years, but recently purchased the entire building, providing a superb opportunity to further enhance their presence in the area.
seven see Devonshire Hall as something of a 'hidden gem'. Its revitalisation will depend on sensitive restoration and bold contemporary interventions. A successful blend of these different approaches will result in high quality and inspiring new facilities which complement the activities occurring within.
Initial ideas focus on the efficient and legible zoning of adaptable spaces, the exposure of stunning historic roof trusses and the insertion of a new partial mezzanine level within this roof void, the installation of rooflights and lightwells, and a bespoke linear canopy and vertical signage column along the northwest elevation above the impressive entrance, previously limited to upper floor access.
The project is scheduled for completion by September 2009 and will provide fully accessible and flexible multi-purpose studios, performance spaces and technology suites, an atrium café and gallery, meeting rooms, administration zones and all other required support facilities.
