Community Facility

Betws-y-Coed

Seven Architecture has been announced as the successful winner of an open design competition to create a new tourist/community facility in the heart of Snowdonia's National Park.

Located in Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia's busiest tourist destination, the new facilities will integrate a number of functional requirements including tourist orientation point with supporting facilities, mountain rescue base, Police post, mountain bike/ruck sack storage and recycling facilities.

Our design approach is based on a thorough understanding of the site and specifically the sensitive context within which the building will sit. We balanced our desire to create a landmark building with a sensitive and considered design approach to create what we believe will be a striking and sustainable building within the most beautiful of settings.

Achieving high levels of energy efficiency and with a low carbon footprint, the proposed building will replace the existing WC facilities and provide a landmark to aid visitors in orientating themselves around the village. Part of the national 'Marin Trail' the area is a nationally recognised centre for outdoor pursuit activities including walking, canoeing, mountain biking, climbing and mountaineering.

The open competition, organised by Conwy County Borough Council, attracted entrants from throughout the UK who were all required to submit their ideas for a sustainable, BREEAM 'excellent' rated facility. It is anticipated that work will begin on site during Spring 2009.
