Seafront Design RIBA Competition Win

Redcar

In collaboration with landscape architects Smeeden Foreman, Seven Architecture have won an international competition to redesign the 'Seafront Zone' in Redcar. Working in conjunction with ARUP, Davis Langdon and Blue Sail destination consultants, the team's shortlisted proposals include design concepts for improvements to the public realm, together with ideas for the seafront's backdrop area.

The competition which was organised by RIBA, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and the Environment Agency attracted more than 50 international entries. Following the public exhibition in the town, the proposals were highly praised for their creativity, intelligence and energy. In particular, the scheme was selected for its ability to provide a distinctive offer in comparison to other UK seafront towns and act as a catalyst for the further regeneration of Redcar.

Central to the proposal is a desire to create a scheme that seamlessly integrates the landscape and architectural elements of the development to provide a cohesive whole. Particularly the team's aim was re-invigorate the seaside town, break down the barriers that exist between the beach and the esplanade and extend and enhance the positive features that already exist.

The aim from the outset was to make the most of the dramatic and strikingly beautiful natural setting at Redcar and employ a contextual and integrated approach to design - linking the natural environment to the built form and high quality public realm.

A key element of our concept is the creation of a 'vertical pier' that provides a striking visual marker and natural look-out point. The pier will boast views along the coast and we hope will help to heighten visitors experience of the seaside in both visual and physical sensations.

In addition to providing a strong visual landmark, the pier will also provide space for community projects and craftsmen, along with cafe and supporting facilities. A new performance space will also be created to sit at the heart of the development with water cascades introduced along the esplanade to create a vibrant and fun environment for water play. At night the interest and vibrancy is continued with the introduction of an undulating LED strip on the promenade and projectors to illuminate the sand with a variety of images.
